Overview of
Professional Liability Insurance -
Errors & Omissions Insurance
Professional Liability Insurance, also sometimes referred to as Errors and Omissions Insurance or E&O Insurance, is insurance to protect you and your company in the event a client, contractor or other third party alleges they have suffered a financial loss as a result of an act of negligence by you or a subconsultant of yours in the delivery of your professional services. Professional liability coverage is different from a General Liability (GL) policy which would cover you mainly for bodily injury or property damage liability caused by a non-professional act. An example of a GL claim is a client slips, falls and injures themselves on your building’s wet title entry.
We specialize in professional liability insurance for architects, engineers and environmental consultants. Each month, we place professional liability insurance coverage on behalf of several hundred firms with eighteen difference insurance companies. These insurance companies are located throughout the US and in the London Insurance market. In our specialty of architects, engineers and environmental consultants there are so many different disciplines, facility types and firm sizes. And yes, an insurance company’s appetite for the different types of firms evolves over time. Our expertise is to know the current market for professional liability insurance coverage and which insurance companies will perform best for your specific practice.
It is very important for you to be aware that all professional liability insurance policies are issued on a claims-made basis. That means that coverage is only provided for work that is done during the policy period and for claims that are filed (made) during the policy period or any short extended reporting period thereafter. In effect, if an E&O insurance policy is cancelled, and no provision is made for an extended reporting period, then all coverage stops and it is as if you never had a policy.
Finally, every insurance policy contains exclusions. We will help you understand and evaluate the exclusions and the coverage limit and retention options to select a Professional Liability insurance policy that fits your needs.
