Jen Caizza recently placed a new policy for an Engineering firm in Texas. For the past couple of years Jen had shopped for the best quote but was unable to secure the account because of the relationship the Engineering firm had with its current agent. This year Jen received the application within a couple weeks of the renewal date. Jen was able to produce a quote that was more competitive than the incumbent agent could provide. In response to this, the current agent, who also had access to the insurance company which was offering the most competitive quote, tried to convince the Engineering firm to sign a Broker of Record letter. This letter would allow the current agent to take over Jen’s quote so that they could place the insurance for the firm.
The Engineering firm recognized the ethical dilemma in signing such a letter and instead had a tough conversation with their agent explaining that they had given them a 48-hour head start and questioning why they hadn’t shopped for additional quotes before they were informed of the competition.
We certainly appreciate that this firm recognized our work and did not sign it over to another agent. As a practice, Hall & Company does not use Broker of Record Letters.
